need to lose weight? setting realistic goals

If you're aiming to lose weight, a target of 5-10% of your current weight is recommended by experts, as a realistic, achievable goal over 6 months. Take a moment to work out what this would be for you:

You may prefer not to weigh yourself at all, but use your waist measurement as a guide: waist loss, rather than weight loss.

Deciding to maintain your current weight and prevent further weight gain is also a worthwhile goal.

Remember that the everyday choices you make about the food you eat and the activity you do, will have the biggest impact on your weight.

Although we've focused on health benefits, your motivation to lose weight might not be health related. It might be:

  • Finding clothes that you like
  • Having more energy
  • Feeling better about yourself
  • Preparation for a holiday
  • Finding it easier to do every day things, like play with the kids
